On-site parking is available for a price. But the weather's so nice - if you don't mind a little walk, plenty of street parking is available in the industrial park area south of the stadium.
Ah, this ticket brochure was refreshing. A venue that has box seats available, offers half-price days, has promotional giveaways, a free kids day, cheap tickets - damn, take advantage of it because this good stuff can't last long!
It wasn't too long ago that the Angels split their Spring Training home between Phoenix and Palm Springs, California, where the second half of the training season was played at Gene Autry Stadium. I'm not sure of the mechanics of the Angels' move, but it was certainly the right decision. The problem with Spring Training in Palm Springs was four-fold:
- The Angels went from very short commutes for road games to very long ones, and vice-versa for their opponents.
- Spring Training often coincides with college Spring Break. I don't know about now (this was before the street "riots," Sonny Bono, and the ban on thong bikinis), but back then student hordes ruled the streets. The traffic jams were unbelievable and unrelenting. It's a long drive to the middle of nowhere (it's in a desert, folks) and the students booked up all the nearby lodging. Certainly, now at my age I wouldn't put up with all that to watch a stupid baseball game, especially if they've banned the thong.
- Only old, rich people live in Palm Springs. And for only half the year. You have to be rich in Palm Springs so to afford:
- A swimming pool, and
- A summer residence in a city whose average daily temperature is below 145° . (Yeah, like I should talk....I live in Arizona).
- It made no sense. I think the owner of the Angels, Mr. Autry, just wanted to play in a stadium that bore his name. I mean, what other explanation could there be in light of factors 1, 2, and 3?
And it didn't make any sense to spend this much space on Palm Springs. Oh well, it's just good to have the Angels here for the whole spring.
By the way, I think it was the Mariners who played in this stadium before they left for the Peoria Sports Complex. I just can't remember, and I'm not a historian.
