Commentary Regrettably, this will be the final season the Milwaukee Brewers will play in Chandler's Compadre Stadium. A new site is being built in the Maryvale area on donated land. Detailed information about this can be found in a letter from the Compadres and a November 11th Phoenix Gazette news article.

Was this a necessary move? Probably not, considering that the facility is only about ten years old (I saw the first game ever played there). But as exhibition baseball continues its quest to emulate the big leagues, financial demands upon local communities increase. The need to compete off the field becomes as important than the one on it. One team sees another get a nice new practice/playing facility, and...well, you know the rest of the story.

It's ironic...a decade ago it looked like the Cactus League would fold as more teams headed for enticing offers in Florida. The construction of Compadre Stadium was a significant contribution to the preservation of the League that is now abandoning them. Hopefully, the Cactus League will continue to grow as the White Sox (?) and others see the sun, and Compadre Stadium will once again have a Major League baseball team that will call it home for one month in spring.

February 16, 1996 New Developments

Suddenly, it looks like the Brewers are sticking around in Chandler for one more year. As it turns out, it will not be possible to build the new Maryvale stadium on schedule and on budget. Read all about it in this February 16, 1996, Phoenix Gazette article.
