Site News will be kept for a few months, then deleted or archived, except for important events, which will remain permanent. You can see the News Archives. Sunday, November 26, 2000 - Well, it's certainly been a while between updates. Even though nothing has happened with Hey Dude's status (it's still cancelled, and reruns are nowhere to be found), I'm sitting on a lot of material that needs posting. To get into the swing of things, I'm posting a new Kelly Brown photo. This image is one of those legendary picture frame photos we've all heard about. A big thanks to Brian from Tampa for sending the photo along. Saturday, June 17, 2000 - At last, I have posted the June 6 interview with Hey Dude writer Lisa Melamed. You guys will love this. There are few people that can, at this point in time, offer up the rich detail and insightful comment Ms. Melamed provides. After reading her interview, you'll probably never watch Hey Dude the same again. Right now, the interview is buried in the Production Info page, but I'll soon move interviews into their own section, and perhaps with permanent front page links. I have to give her so much credit for the success of this interview. As the interview subject, she did a great job of extrapolating answers into nooks and crannies I would've never found on my own. And you'll see how her approach to Hey Dude paid off in the show's subsequent high standards and quality. I owe a great deal of thanks to Lisa for volunteering her time. I've also added a satellite picture of the Hey Dude grounds. The sat image was taken in 1992, yet it shows the general state of the set grounds as they stand today. I've crudely annotated the image. Oh, almost forgot...sometime during the last week, I slipped in new video captures for "Day One at the Bar None" and "Battle of the Sexes." These are big sets of about 140 images each. Go to the Multimedia Corrals to see them. Friday, June 9, 2000 - Hey Dude fan Alan Locke skunked out the actual sets at the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch and submitted these revealing photos. Well, I too had the pleasure of staying at the ranch as a guest, and thanks to Alan, I was able to find the sets too. What can I say, it was a fun find, but what a mess! Click on either thumbnail to see larger images. I'll flesh out these pages with more information and images as Alan sends them along. I can tell you that the remaining structures include both bunkhouses, the main lodge (as pictured, including Mr. Ernst's office), and the stable. The main lodge has been demolished. The lake still exists, along with the now-dilapidated dock. Behind-the-scenes fans, get ready! I had a long conversation with key Hey Dude writer Lisa Melamed. She also spent a few months on location, and she has a lot of very interesting memories about those days. When you're done, you'll feel as though you were there yourself. The entire transcription process may take a while, but it'll be coming soon. Sunday, June 4, 2000 - Added screen captures for the following episodes: "Our Little Champion," "Bunkmate Battles," and "Low Budget Brad." Tuesday, May 30, 2000 - Mucho work on the Stills Gallery section of the Multimedia Corrals. As each episode gets posted, you'll see more pics, bigger pics, and better quality pics. The old galleries have been taken off-line, but two new episodes have been posted in their place: "Ted's Saddle" and "Teacher's Pest." To give you an idea, each episode's capture set includes 75 to 100 images apiece. I want to shake out these two episodes before I post any more, but already captured and ready to ship out are "Our Little Champion," "Bunkmate Battles," "Ghost Stories," "Miss Tucson," and "Low Budget Brad." The key to making these galleries work is some new JavaScript I twisted up. At this point, it (hopefully) works with Xoom's servers, addresses bandwidth issues in an elegant way, and most importantly, makes creation of each gallery a snap. After I prep a new image set, I only need to change about six variables to make everything work. The actual image capturing is the most time consuming part of the job. But I get to watch Hey Dude while I do it, so I'm not complaining! I'd appreciate any feedback on how the new setup works. I have a cable modem, plus everything gets cached as I test the code, so I can't get a true idea of how (in)efficient the galleries might be on a 28.8/56k connection. Also, it probably helps immensely if you're running 800x600 or more. A note from Hey Dude writer Lisa Melamed has been added to the Production Info page. Imagine my surprise when I found her in my e-mail! Lisa wrote many of Hey Dude's best episodes, including "Dan the Man," "Miss Tucson," and "Low Budget Brad." I hate to even hint at things before they actually happen, but there may be more to come from this source. Stay tuned. Also did a stealth update on the existing episode details for #2019 "Ghost Stories" and #5053 "Miss Tucson." These feature the updated graphics, the newer format, the iReviewIts, etc. The video capturing I did on version one of "Miss Tucson" was exceedingly bad, so I'm relieved to get this one updated on par with Wanda McKelvy's excellent write-up. I'm out of town for the next few days, so no likely updates this weekend. However, I may be going someplace of interest. (Aw, there we go, more hinting!) If so, it'll get posted. Wednesday, May 24, 2000 - Added Hey Dude writer Mark Cerulli's photo to his interview, which can be found on the Production Info page. Also, it looks like the review/rate it feature works. Right now, the only episode set up for rating/review is #5058, "Jealous Guy". Check out the episode detail (go to the Episode Guide, and then click the horseshoe by episode 58). The iReviewIt feature should be pretty obvious. I'll let you all know as old episode details are retrofitted with the feature. Sunday, May 21, 2000 - Hey Dude fan Friscobill alerted me to the marriage between Christine Taylor and Ben Stiller, so the front page blurb has been suitably updated. Congrats to the new couple! Also, Doug Snauffer has provided a great little tidbit about Kelly Brown (Brad) and Debra Kalman (Lucy). It's been posted to the Production Info page. One point of fact: Kelly Brown was 23 years old when production started, significantly older than the rest of the cast. Doug also sends a VCR-programming alert. TNN shows old reruns of TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes, hosted by Dick Clark and Ed McMahon. Doug recalls (as Wanda did in her "Miss Tucson" Episode Detail) that Hey Dude makes the blooper reel when a bat swoops down during the beauty contest. It looks like the relevant episode may be airing this week. In Arizona, Bloopers airs weekdays at 2 PM on TNN. Your times may most certainly vary, so check your local listings. Also, somebody from Russia left a message in the Guestbook. Go figure, as who knows how Hey Dude connects into that! Anyhow, Elena made a very good point about the Javascript not working. This has something to do with the Multimedia Corrals being archived on the Xoom server. The galleries are set up to open images in new, script-generated windows, and Xoom somehow breaks that. It must have something to do with the ad-bar marquee that's applied to every Xoom page, since the JavaScript works fine on my local machine (as it did on the old server). The only workarounds are to use existing windows (inconvenient with all the load times and back & forth), new windows (a little better, but there's the "on top" issue), or frames (probably what is going to happen, with thumbnails in the sidebar). Or maybe the Xoom account can be configured to use popup ad windows instead of the marquee. I can't tell you when this might get fixed, as 1) new content has priority, 2) I'm now liberally illustrating episode details, and 3) I'm probably going to re-capture many of the images to a higher quality. Saturday, May 13, 2000 - Some minor changes. Added a new tidbit from Doug Snauffer about David Brisbin on the Production Info page. I've reorganized the page so that each note is on its own page. This will make it easier to expand, and I can load each note with graphics. Also permanently posted the Cerulli interview there as well. If I can roust up more interviews, maybe they can be broken out into their own section. With Doug's generous help, I've been able to get in contact with a few key people, so good things may be coming. BTW, that iReviewIt feature on the "Jealous Guy" detail seems to be broken, so don't use it. Perhaps tonight I'll check into it. Tuesday, May 9, 2000 - Added Wanda McKelvy's episode summary for "Jealous Guy," where Ted and Kyle get stuck in the desert after arguing over Brad. In honor of finally posting this detail, which I've been sitting on since December, 1999, I've updated the poll question as well: Who would you like to see Brad with, Ted or Kyle? I'm expecting a landslide in this poll, but we'll have to see how the sympathy factor for Kyle plays out. While updating the poll page, I saw that the site hosting the poll also has a slick (free!) service called iReviewIt. It can set up so that anybody can rate anything. So I'm thinking of adding this link to each detail page, where you can rate the writing, acting, and whatever else. Or maybe I'll add it to the episode guide (at the risk of making it unwiedly and bandwidth unfriendly). Or maybe I'll just create an entire reviews page. Or maybe it'll all be cross-linked! Saturday, May 6, 2000 - I had the opportunity to interview Mark Cerulli on Friday for the website. If the name isn't familiar, then you aren't reading the credits! Mark wrote five episodes of Hey Dude, including "Rainmen," "Dueling Ranches," "Killer Ernst," "They're Back," and "Doghouse Blues." It was quite a privilege for me to talk with him, and he's a heck of a nice guy. You may not believe this, but I don't have a whole lot of experience interviewing people about Hey Dude. But Mark was very accomodating. I hope you find Mark's comments and insights interesting! For now, I'll probably put the interview in the Production Info section, though I have yet to do that. Hopefully, if I can roust up more interviews, they go in their own section. It's been more work than I thought just getting the data transcribed and done up. If you want to hop right to it, here's a link to the interview. If anything changes on this page, it'll be related to graphics and organization, but not content. I'm hoping to get some more images on the page, including some photos Mr. Cerulli took when he was at the ranch. Sunday, April 30, 2000 - Listbot sent out the following announcement: We are currently experiencing system-wide delays in the delivery of messages. Our engineering team is working hard to resolve this issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience! So those of you who receive the automatic update notices via e-mail probably didn't get last night's. If you're not on the mail list, and you want to be notified when changes are made to the site, sign up at the bottom of the front page where it says "Sign Up Here For Breakfast Ride." Saturday, April 29, 2000 - Added a new page titled Production Info. It's a smorgasbord of behind-the-scenes notes, again heavily fleshed out with Doug Snauffer's material. More info on him on the page as well! This has been added onto the On-Site Links page. Also, I don't think I ever noted on the mail list or news that "The Legend of Jed" Episode Detail was posted. This happened many months ago. The synopsis was written in loving detail by -- who else -- Wanda McKelvy. I'm running out of superlatives when describing her summaries. They're all just great reads, and her Horse Droppings (episode notes!) are a blast. Note that i still have to add the header graphic to this one. To read this, go to the episode guide and click on the horseshoe by "The Legend of Jed." I've also made a number of small cosmetic changes. A few graphics here and there. More importantly, all episode designations will now be in terms of the episode titles, rather than the number. I've back-edited a few pages to reflect those changes, even in material submitted by others (call that editorial control). The entire Hey Dude Encyclopedia has been coded by title abbreviations, rather than episode numbers. I still have to key the title abbreviations somewhere, probably in the episode guide. To be frank, I always found it very difficult to refer to episodes by number. To this day, if you mention episode #63, I'll have very little confidence in matching the episode. But say "Jake's Fight" and I know exactly what you mean. as an example, "Jake's Fight" is keyed as [JF]. "Day One at the Bar None" is [D1BN]. You get the idea. This is consistent with every other television program guide I know of. Episode titles are religiously respected, and the numerical designations are only important in the ordinal sense. Oh yeah, upon further review, one change in the episode guide: "Goldlocks" and "Ted's Saddle" were transposed, in light of the official list received. "Goldilocks" is #1003, and "Ted's Saddle" is #1004. BTW, if someone's got a good idea for a new poll question, please let me know: danichi@swlink.net. Thanks! Tuesday, April 25, 2000 - Updated the Episode Guide once again with some more production info Doug Snauffer provided. Included is information on how and why Hey Dude was terminated. You may be asking, how does Doug know so much? Well, I don't want to compromise any of his privacy, so for now, trust me when I say his information is very credible. You may be able to infer from the quote how he obtained some of his information. Again, I can't stress enough how much support Doug has provided to this site on all levels, and he deserves a big thank you from all us Hey Dude fans. I've also posted a link to a plain text version of the complete Episode Guide as received. You can save this version to your hard drive, print it, massage it, whatever. Monday, April 24, 2000 - It's been a while since the last real update, but the wait was worth it. Doug Snauffer has provided the complete episode list, courtesy of his contacts with Cinetel. Yes, the episode guide now contains all the episode titles, and their official episode numbers. Amazingly, the numbers Kyle Taylor assigned were absolutely accurate. However, we now have "season" information. For instance, episode #33 is now #3033, meaning that was produced in the third season. Note that these are production seasons, not annual seasons in the classical sense. The other changes were minor. "Rainman" is actually titled "Rainmen" (plural). Ampersands are often used instead of the word "and". Doug has also provided a wealth of information that will be incorporated into the web site. I mean, some really good stuff. Keep an eye out for updates as they are made. Doug has also provided some leads that (hopefully) I can parlay into greater things. Regardless, I owe a great deal of thanks of Doug. Also, I've added another of Wanda McKelvy's wonderful episode details, this time for [3032] "Superstition." I really owe a lot to Wanda as well, and I certainly feel bad about the accumulated backlog of details. This is the first step towards chipping the pile down. Graphically, I've tried to cater to Kelly Brown fans, so Brad fans take note. I really don't mind pandering to that segment of the Hey Dude fan demographic. The header montage is sloppy -- I intend to redo it, as I'm exploring quicker ways to generate that part of each synopsis. (Truthfully, it's been so long that I've completely forgotten the old process of creating the beveled edges and speckled border.) I should be adding more stuff tomorrow night, but at the same time, I'm going to try cleaning up loose ends on the web site (typos, bad links, etc.), especially in light of the newfound episode titles. A lot of work that'll be done on this web site will be transparent to most of you. Another small thing. I've been using a high-speed cable modem connection as of a few months ago. I may migrate the web site over to my @home space. I already reserved the user name "thebarnone". If this happens, I'll make the transition as seamless as possible, leaving a re-direct up with my swlink.net account, which I will keep for e-mail purposes. Hopefully, for most, it'll involve nothing more than a bookmark update. Saturday, October 17, 1998 - Planning to post the URL on the Hey Dude message board on Sunday, October 18. | |

This information is verifiable, or of a nature that could be readily verifiable. You can pretty much believe what you see here. Sources are cited. Latest information is at the top Christine Taylor and actor-comedian Ben Stiller were wed on May 13, 2000. Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, in which David Lascher has a recurring role, will be moving from ABC to the WB network for the fall 2000 lineup. This was not due to ABC dropping or cancelling the program. In fact, the WB network considers this a coup of sorts! Apparently, ABC didn't offer the show's owner, Viacom, a respectable bid, so the program was shopped and snapped up. No word as to any other potential changes regarding David Lascher's status, but the change should have no effect. Read more in this E! Online article. From E! Online's December 1999 Q&A with David Lascher: At some point in your career, have you actually fallen for
one of your costars?
Thanks to Ray for the heads up on this item! Fellow Hey Dudoholic Naomi Langworthy provides some very detailed info on Jonathan Galkin's post-Hey Dude work: Jonathan Galkin was also on a, probably mere 15-20 episode, show, "Way Cool." I accidentally stumbled across it one Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. on NBC and was instantly hooked because, of course, it starred the object of my affection, and was my first post-Hey Dude citing of any of the cast. Made in 1991, perhaps slightly overlapping the tragic end of Hey Dude, it was made up of several sketches, both peculiar to the "theme" of that episode and recurring sketches which also weaved the theme into itself. Definitely a well-put together show, even though it had its (relatively frequent) cheesy moments. Very typical of the early-90s look. A completely teenage cast, it starred other vanishing actors, namely:
Granted, this show could be dubbed, as I like to say, "cheese at its finest", but it nevertheless caught my attention, had its entertaining points, and should have lasted much longer than it did. Yeah, I have to admit mainly because it was just more of a chance for me to watch Jonathan Galkin with extra stars in my eyes... (so, I'm in complete understanding of your admiration of Kelly Brown :) ... and I think it would have had it been in a better time slot. I only managed to grab about six episodes on tape, but it's enough to prove that my guy didn't disappear from the face of the earth right after Hey Dude ended...he waited about a year, THEN vanished without a trace. :( I'm still on a quest to gain more info, however. Thanks, Naomi! 11/09/99 - ENGAGED: Comic-actor Ben Stiller ("There's Something About Mary") and actress Christine Taylor ("The Brady Bunch Movie"), reports New York's Daily News. The two reportedly met this spring while working on a TV pilot. (Thanks to Camille C. for the heads up on this news!) David Lascher has a recurring TV series role on Sabrina the Teenaged Witch. From ABC's official web site: David Lascher stars as Josh, a graduate student who runs a coffee house and becomes the object of Sabrina's affections, on ABC's "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch," now entering its fourth hit season. Sabrina stars Mellisa Joan Hart, another Nickelodeon alumnus. Sabrina airs on ABC every Friday at 9PM. Hey Dude reruns go off the air on January 23, 1999. The last episode aired is "No More Mr. Nice Guy". Christine Taylor, David Lascher, and much of the Hey Dude crew now live in Los Angeles. She rarely sees any other cast members from the Hey Dude. [An interview on Visions of Christine Taylor] Graham Yost, who wrote some episodes of Hey Dude, wrote the hit film Speed, which starred Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. David Brisbin is married to Laura Innes, who is a regular on the hit TV series, ER. Innes appeared in "Teacher's Pest" as Ted's English teacher, and also wrote "Rest in Pieces." |
This information is not verifiable, or of a nature that cannot be readily verifiable. Do not believe or bet on anything you read here. Sources may not be cited. Latest information is at the top According to The Unofficial David Lascher Home Page, David Lascher was recently married. Here's the blurb: In real life, (which is almost as important as TV life) David just got married, in what was, by all accounts, a splendid event, with a good time had by all! Web visitor Troy Hudson left the following bits of info on the guestbook (presented verbatim): Hi Everyone.I have searched the world around for Hey Dude Facts and i wan to share them with you I have found about the cast and here is there story Danny-Lives on an Indian Reservation in Utah Brad-Married and has 1 kid Melody-Played in Wedding Singer and Brady Bunch Ted-Plays in Clueless the show He has 2 kids he isnt married Mr Ernest-Played in Forrest Gump.Teaches acting at Baily College in Vancouver Lucy-She worked at the dude ranch in real life. Jake-I Wish i knew Buddy-He is now gothic Kyle-He is married to Actress Kira Sherman-She's Hot Though some of this info jibes with fact, take it with a grain of salt. The same "Troy Hudson" immediately left other guestbook messages under the names Mark, Sean, Alex, Mo, Tiffany, and low. I received an e-mail from a credible source who provided the following information. I'm sure it's true, but simply because I can't verify this info, it's included here in the Rumors section: One interesting fact is that there are actually 66 episodes. An unaired pilot was also made and featured the female stars of the show but had different male actors. Then it was recast, rewritten and reshot. That's when Dee LaDuke, the creator, left. She was unhappy with the direction the show was taking and walked. The ranch was built on an unused portion of the Tanque Verde ranch and was torn down after production was over. Kelly Brown lives in New York state, and is married with kids. |
