What Exactly is a Geek?

Check out this excellent definition of a geek. It really just about explains it all.

The Geek Code

The Geek Code is a way of describing yourself in all your geekiness to the world. Here's my geek code:

-----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK-----
Version: 3.1
GCS d- s: a--- C++(++++)$ UL++(++++)@$ P+++ L+++$>++++ E W++(+++)$ N+ o-- K-- w !O M+(-)$ V--()$ PS--() PE++(+) Y+ PGP>++ t+ 5+(++) X++ R tv+ b++ DI+ D+ G+ e>+++ h!
------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------
I have a translation for the geek code impaired (generated by "ungeek"). This code really does a good job of describing me!

For the offical geek code page, check out The Geek Zone. It has the newest code, programs to translate the code, and even a geek code generator form.

The Jargon File

The Jargon File is a huge dictionary-type document that explains a ton of techno-slang and jargon. It's a great reference for geeks. Check it out now!

Jargon File (Hypertext)
Jargon File (Text)
Jargon File (GNU info)

I've written a little perl program to lookup jargon file entries. It's really fast, can do multiple entries at once, and even regexps! It really is cool, and it's right here. If you use it, please let me know (moral support :-)).

Here's a slightly webified version of my jargon file search tool. Enter some words or regular expression to try it out.

Stuff Related to Geeks

alt.geek
It's usually filled with junk, but occasionally there's a gem to be found here.

The Dilbert Zone
My favorite cartoon geek has his very own official site.

Geek Site of the Day
This is a pretty cool site with a ton of more-or-less geeky sites.

The Nerdity Test
I think it's actually a geekiness test that's in denial (disguise?).

You might be a computer geek if...
Funny. And a little bit true. (Ok, it's right on the mark...)
